2nd Lt Justin Lee Sisson, formerly of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, from injuries sustained while serving his country in Afghanistan.
Justin was born, July 16, 1989 in Burnsville, MN, to Kevin Brooks and Phyllis Liming Sisson. Justin's father's job caused the family to move around every few years, but Justin took it in stride and made friends everywhere he went. He was always happy and had a big smile for everyone.
Growing up, Justin loved playing sports. He was an avid baseball player, and as a High School wrestler, went to state twice. He was Co Captain of his Wrestling team.
He also loved the Boy Scouts, starting out as a Tiger Cub when the family lived in Naperville, IL, then moving up the ranks where he earned the Eagle Scout before he was 16 years old. He was a member of the Tribe of Mic O Say Honor Society.
After graduating from Blue Valley West High School in Overland Park, May 2007, Justin received an ROTC Scholarship to Florida State University, his Dad's alma mater. During his Freshman year at FSU, he joined the Florida National Guard, and completed Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. During his Sophmore year at FSU, Justin chose to deploy with his National Guard Unit for a year in Mosul, Iraq. While there he performed various roles, gunner, driver, mechanic, electronic warfare specialist and intelligence specialist. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his exceptional service
He returned to FSU in 2010 after serving, graduated and received his commission as a 2nd Lt in the U.S. Army in April 2012. He earned the George C. Justin completed IBOLC, Air Assault, Airborne, Sapper and Ranger Schools before being assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, 506th IN, 4th BCT, Ft. Campbell, KY, in January 2013. He deployed to Afghanistan with the ADVON group in April 2013.
Justin loved being outdoors, and enjoyed family trips hiking and skiing. He always looked forward to visiting his Grandma Jan's home at Lake of the Ozarks where he could water ski and inter tube. He also loved being at his Grandma Judy's where he looked forward to bonfires and cookouts with family and friends. He was an animal lover, and his dog Hunter, and cats Rascal and Bandit had a special place in his heart.
Justin had many friends that he loved and was dearly loved back, but his big brother Ryan was his first best friend. They had a special relationship, being only 16 months apart.
Justin wanted to be in the Army since he was a child, and chose to follow in the footsteps of his Grandfather's, and great Grandfathers because he especially loved his country. He was very proud to wear the uniform and to be an Army Ranger.
Justin is survived by his parents, Kevin and Phyllis of Phoenix, AZ, his brother Ryan of Phoenix, AZ, his
Grandmothers' Judith Liming of Basehor, KS and Janis Beshoner of Englewood, FL, many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, family members and friends. He was preceded in Death by his Grandfather's Brooks H. Sisson and Robert L. Liming.
A visitation will be from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, Friday, June 14, 2013 at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Wesley Chapel, 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood, Kansas 66224. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 15, 2013 also at the church. Interment will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
