Dr. Henry Hardy

May 19, 1925 — October 5, 2015

Henry Malcolm Hardy, MD, 90, formerly of Mission Hills, KS and Chapel Hill, NC, died peacefully on October 5th at St. Luke’s Hospice House, Kansas City.  A celebration of his life will be held on November 21st from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel & Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS.
Malcolm was born in Guiseley, England in 1925 to Gateshill and Elizabeth Vint Hardy. He received his medical degree from the University of Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Malcolm met his wife, Eileen Wickens, a nurse, at the Leeds Hospital. They were married in 1950 for 49 years until her death in 2000. In 1957, he immigrated to Kansas City with his family where he taught at KU Medical Center and practiced as an anesthesiologist at St Luke’s Hospital until his retirement in 1996. In 2003, Malcolm moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina where he built his dream home. There, he met his second wife, Faye Granberry, who preceded him in death in 2010.
Dr. Hardy was a longtime patron of the arts, including the Lyric Opera, the Nelson Gallery, Kansas City Ballet, Missouri Repertory, and his greatest love, the Kansas City Symphony. He often said if not a doctor, he would have become a conductor. He loved animals, travel, books, collecting pre-Columbian and Egyptian art, discussing politics, anything electronic, and of course, his family.
All who knew Malcolm will remember him as a distinguished, positive, accomplished, kind, generous, and gentle person. The son of a British school headmaster, Malcolm took great pleasure in the education and successes of his seven children, and their children.
He is survived by his brother, Dr. David Hardy, Goole, England, his seven children, Jane Bireta (Richard), Andrew Hardy (Ellen), Susan Ahart (John), Roger Ian Hardy (Umy), Rosemary Hardy, Karen Hardy, and Douglas Hardy (Christina), sixteen grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to The Parkinson Foundation of the Heartland, 8900 State Line Rd #320, Leawood, KS 66206.
