Gene Bahr was born on June 5, 1940, in Emporia, Kansas to Helen and Arnold Bahr. As the first grandchild, he was doted upon by his loving parents, grandparents, and numerous aunts and uncles. His Grandpa Bahr and father, Arnold, owned Bahr Hardware store in Gridley, Kansas. Many of Gene’s growing up years were spent at the store which was a local hub for young and old. It was there that Gene, his brother, Rol, and later his little sister Karesa, started their annual fireworks stand.
Gene, Rol, and Karesa had wonderful experiences growing up in Gridley. Their lives revolved around church, family, hard work, and the joys of freedom and fantasy in the world of nature.
Gene graduated from Emporia State University where he made many friends in his fraternity, Alpha Kappa Lambda. During one summer break he had an internship with the Small business Administration, and upon college graduation he became a full-time employee in the Wichita office of the SBA.
Gene joined the Air National Guard and missed being activated during the Vietnam War because his unit served as the guard for the Kansas Governor. In 1967 he married Teri Quinn, and they raised four sons, Brad, Jeff, Dan and Jared.
Gene became Chief of Finance in the Kansas City Regional Office of SBA in 1974, and the family moved to Overland Park, Kansas. His younger two sons were born in Kansas City, Missouri, but as Gene always said, “they got back to Kansas as soon as they could.”
Gene retired from the Small Business Administration in 1993 when his struggle with depression and other mental illness issues prohibited him from functioning at his previous high-level of financial expertise. The descent of his illness was a loss to him personally, as well as to his family and friends.
Gene had resided at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas for the past six years. The staff and caregivers there treated him with respect and dignity, and he felt as sense of comfort and peace during those years.
His last day was spent with his family in Kansas City, where they celebrated Thanksgiving Day, and the next day with his brother, Rol in Sabetha. Gene suffered a seizure in his room at the AC Home and died the evening of November 27, 2009.
He is survived by his wife, Teri, and sons Brad, Jeff (Cassie), Dan (Tiffany), Jared (Carol), and six adored grandchildren; Brittany, Emily, Stella, Quinn, Lydia, and Anna. In addition, his brother, Roland (Carol), sister, Karesa (Dennis) Belsha, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gene’s parents predeceased him.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the many wonderful doctors and caregivers who invested so much in Gene’s care and treatment. Contributions are suggested to the Apostolic Christian Home, 511 Paramount St., Sabetha, KS 66534, or Johnson County Mental Health, 6440 Nieman Road, Shawnee Mission, KS 66203.
Visitation will be at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas, on Tuesday, December 1, 2009. Funeral Service at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Johnson County Chapel.
