Albert Reynolds ?Monty? Montgomery, 87 years old, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, at Santa Marta Senior Living Community in Olathe.
A memorial service will be held at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, Saturday, Oct. 11 at 9:30 A.M. A reception will be held in Friendship Hall at the church following the service.
Monty was born in East Brady, PA, fifth of six children to Wave (Mast) & Albert Reynolds Montgomery, Sr. He graduated from high school in Kittanning, PA, & went on to college at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, PA, where he played football & majored in architecture. During WWII, he was a B-17 bomber pilot in the European theatre and flew 26 missions, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Oak Leaf clusters.
Monty married Evelyn Marie Fritz on July 6, 1945 after a long distance romance flying on weekends between Philadelphia, where Evelyn was working as a dietician, and Sebring, Florida, where he was an Army flight instructor. Their first child, Susan Diane was born April 21, 1946 on Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Christopher Roger was born 3 years later in Pittsburg, PA.
Immediately after his Army discharge as a major, Monty began his career with Butler Mfg Co. as a sales representative covering a territory in New Jersey, Pennsylvania & Delaware. His career path to Kansas City went by way of Huntington, PA for 3 years, & Minneapolis for a similar period of time. In 1954 he transferred to the Butler home office in KC where he met Bob McMillen. The two of them went into business forming Monmac Construction Co. in 1956, and they enjoyed a great friendship and partnership for 25 years building commercial and industrial buildings, indoor tennis courts, and athletic field houses mostly in the KC area, but also in Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, and St. Louis.
Monty and Evelyn lived in Prairie Village since 1954, and their church home was Village Presbyterian Church where Monty served as an elder. Throughout the years they traveled with friends on many wonderful overseas trips, were members of Blue Hills C.C., and wintered in California or Florida. He loved animals, and he and his West Highland terrier ?McMuffin? were inseparable.
Monty is survived by Evelyn, his loving wife of 63 years, daughter Susan Moody of Tulsa, son Chris, and two grandsons, Brian and Jason, all of whom cherish his memory. He will be remembered by his friends for his honesty, warm heart, and great sense of humor.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Village Presbyterian Church.
