Alfred J. Hoffman (AL) Hoffman died at home on March 27, 2007.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 30, at the Colonial Congregational Church, 7039 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kan., followed by a reception at the church. Inurnment at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf.
Born in Amarillo, Texas April 16,1917, Al was the son of Kurt J. and Mabel (Beven) Hoffman. He and his parents moved from a family farm near Muscotah, Kansas to Kansas City in 1920. He graduated from Benton Grade School (1930), Central High School (1934), Kansas City Junior College (1936) and University of Missouri Law School, Columbia(1942), where he was Magister of Tiedeman Inn of Phi Delta Phi. He attended the University of Kansas during 1938-39, where he was a member of Nu Chapter of Sigma Nu. He was a member of the Missouri and American Bar Associations and a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). He was a Founder of Jones & Babson Inc. (1959), a mutual fund management company, and was its President and CEO until he retired in 1985. Prior to his service with Jones & Babson, he was an attorney for the Prudential Insurance Co. and the Kansas City Fire & Marine Insurance Co. He was a Naval Aviator in World War II (1942-46) and received the Navy's Commendation Award. He served the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub Master and a Scout Master and was the recipient of its Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of Colonial Church in Prairie Village (Congregational) since 1951 and a past Moderator. He was a longtime member of the Cooper/Morris FCA Bible Study Group. He was an Advisory Director of the Keith Worthington Chapter of the ALS Association and a member of the Man of the Month Fraternity.He was a past member of the Kansas City Missouri Civic Council and the Vanguard Club and a former director of Crittenton. He became hooked on golf at an early age and was never able to kick the habit. Al first came within two strokes of shooting his age when he was 69. In 1989, motivated to teaching kids "how to play" the game of life through the game of golf and encouraged by Tom Watson, he founded the Kansas City Golf Foundation, now known as the Junior Golf Foundation of Greater Kansas City. He was its President until he became Chairman in 1998. In 1996, the United States Golf Association, the PGA TOUR, the PGA of America, the LPGA and the Augusta National Golf Club combined to establish The First Tee in order to do the same thing for boys and girls around the world, i.e. teach them the Life Skills that are inherently learned while playing the game of golf. The Foundation was a model for The First Tee program that it administers for the Greater Kansas City Area. He was a director and past president of both the Kansas City Golf Association and the Senior Golfer Association of Greater Kansas City (the Kansas City Seniors). He was a former United States Golf Association Committeeman and a USGA Rules Official. He was a Director Emeritus of the Western Golf Association. He was a member emeritus of Mission Hills Country Club and a past director and president. He was a former member of the Pauma Valley Country Club, Pauma Valley, Calif., and a former member of the Fox Acres Country Club of Red Feather Lakes, Colo.
He married Falice Pittenger (Pitt) in 1946, who succumbed to ALS February 11, 1990. Their infant son, Peter Kurt, predeceased them in 1947. He is survived by his wife, Frances (Ward), whom he married September 15, 1990; his daughter Teri Whisler and her husband Steve of Nixa, Mo.; his son, John Hoffman of Enterprise, Utah; his stepson, Bill Ward of Kansas City; his granddaughter and Teri's daughter, Laurie Miller, her husband Travis and their twins, Brooke and Alex, of Republic, Mo.; his step-grandson Mike Whisler, his wife Pat, and their sons, Jason and Bryan of Willard, Mo.
