Alfred J Moritz, 88, passed away peacefully, in his home, on May 23, 2017. Al was born July 12, 1928 in Chicago, Il. He was a graduate of Hirsch High School, served in the United States Army from 1950-1952 and started working for AT&T, at the age of 17, until his retirement in 1988. He met his wife LaVerne at AT&T and married, in 1952. They had 2 children, Cynthia and Arthur. In 1963, he was transferred to the Kansas City area and settled in Overland Park, Ks.
Al started as a Lineman for AT&T in Chicago and worked his way to Manager in Government Communications, Sales and Human Resources, retiring with 43 years of service.
Al has been involved in Barbershop Harmony style music his entire adult life. Al sang in the Bell Chorus for the Bell System while working for AT&T and was in a Quartet within the Chorus known as the “Four Phonies”. He then joined the Southwest Suburban Barbershop Chorus, serving in many capacities including President of the Chorus. In addition, he was a part of a Quartet known as the “BMA Beaconaires” and eventually “The Kansas Citians”. He has been an active member of the Heart of America Chorus for over 61 years.
Al was a Mason and a Shriner. He has been very involved in the Ararat Shrine belonging to the Greeters, the Banjo Band, as well as a Circus Daddy for 45 years.
In Al’s spare time, he worked building garages in Chicago. After retiring, he did Handyman work for his widowed co-workers for nearly 20 years. There wasn’t anything Al wouldn’t do for any of his friends or friends of friends. He was very resourceful and if he didn’t have a piece or part he needed to repair something, he would make one or he would “improvise”.
Al always had a smile on his face, was a very positive force, saw the “cup half full”, believed any adversity could be overcome and tried to make that happen…always. He was a kind and gentle soul, didn’t know a stranger and deep down an entertainer at heart.
Al was devoted to his family and was involved in everything his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were a part of. He was so proud and loved them more deeply than he demonstrated.
Al is survived by his daughter, Cyndy; daughter-in-law, Gail Aita (Paul); 6 grandchildren, Jennifer DuBois (Michael), Michael Moritz, Andrew Moritz (Amy), Adam Moritz (Jessica), Shannon Hsu (Andrew), Courtney Mika (Chris); 10 great grandchildren, Zachary, Austin, Tanner, Olivia, Emersen, Hudson, Abigail, Enzo, Diana and Ella; brother, Chuck Moritz (Marcia); sister, Joyce Haan (Fred). He was preceded in death by his wife LaVerne of 46 years and son, Arthur. He will be greatly missed by the many who were privileged to have known him.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 6, 2017 promptly at 10am with a visitation reception & refreshments immediately following there at the Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave. OPKS. The family requests memorials be donated to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
