Alice W. Arms, 101, of Leawood, KS, peacefully passed away on July 30, 2010. She was born in Kansas City, KS, on October 18, 1908, to Arthur and Helen Wells. She led a full, productive, and rewarding life.
She graduated from Northeast High School, Kansas City, MO, and Research Hospital Nursing School, after which she became a supervisor at Children's Mercy Hospital. There she met Dr. Arnold V. Arms, who was then a student. She received her B.A. degree in Home Economics from College of Emporia, Emporia, KS, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and was listed in Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities. Dr. Arms and she were married September 4, 1938. Together, they traveled extensively throughout the world.
She was a former home nursing chairman for the Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross. For many years, she was an active participant in the arts, sculpting, beading, painting, and designing and crafting table decorations for many organizations. At various times during those years, she was a member of the Society of Fellows of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, co-chairman of the UMKC Missouri Repertory Theatre Guild, on the board of the Kansas City Philharmonic, president of Saint Luke's Hospital Medical Staff Auxiliary, president of Jackson County Medical Society Auxiliary, chairman of Circle 9 of Country Club Christian Church, and president of Keramic Club of Kansas City. She audited classes at University of Missouri at Kansas City and Johnson County Community College and studied sculpture with Kwan Wu Gallery and School of Art. Her lovely sculptures and bronzes reflect her joyous spirit and will keep her memory alive.
Her husband, Dr. Arms, passed away August 25, 1992. Her parents, brother Dr. Arthur Wells, sister Helen Wells, and grandson David Arms preceded her in death. She is survived by her three children: Dr. Richard Arms and wife Carol of Leawood, KS; Dr. Robert Arms and wife Linda of the Village of Loch Lloyd, MO; and Dr. Demaris Hansen and husband Eric of Manchester, CT. She is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
The family thanks the staff of The Manor at Grace Gardens and the staff of Catholic Community Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 3, at the George Hamilton Combs Memorial Chapel of Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64113. Cremation. The family suggests memorials to the church.
