OBITUARY
Alicia Raquel Taylor, 69, of Overland Park, KS, died June 5, 2015.
Alicia Taylor, loving wife of John Taylor, passed away on June 5th in her home in Overland Park, Kansas, with family by her side, after an extended, courageous struggle with breast cancer.
Alicia was born to Josefina Ramona Gonzalez and the late Humberto Eligio Gonzalez on July 14, 1945 in Azul, province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She was the eldest of four children, including her sisters Graciela, the late Mirta, and Noemi.
After completing her primary and secondary education, Alicia met John Taylor who was serving a mission for the LDS church in Argentina. After his mission, John and Alicia corresponded for a couple years, which led to a proposal. Alicia and John were married on June 17, 1966 in Mesa, Arizona. Alicia relocated to Canada to live with her husband's parents, while John, a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force, was deployed to Thailand. Upon his return, John was reassigned to the Air Force base in Wichita, Kansas, where Alicia and John began their family.
Over the years, Alicia birthed and raised seven children with John. After several work related relocations, Alicia and John made their current home in Overland Park, Kansas.
Throughout her adult life, Alicia actively served in the LDS church, accepting many opportunities to bless the lives of others. She served for many years in the children's organization of the church as well as President of the Relief Society, a women's organization. Alicia was called to serve with her husband on a church mission to Uruguay for 18 months and also to assist in several inner city congregations in the Kansas City area. Alicia enjoyed genealogy work, as well, and served as Director of the local church Family History Center for a time.
Professionally, after raising her children, Alicia was instrumental in helping launch Propio Language Services, a nationwide translation service.
In all of Alicia's endeavors, she was a quiet servant leader, often observing before acting. Her gentle manner, sweet voice and kindness was the way she ministered with love to those around her. Alicia enjoyed reading, flower gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Alicia’s breast cancer was first diagnosed after she had returned from her mission to Uruguay. She began a series of radiation and chemotherapy treatments lasting several weeks, which took its toll on her health and required an extended time for recovery. It seemed, though, as the cancer had been eradicated. Unfortunately, after 3 years of remission, the cancer returned and had spread into Alicia’s lungs. She fought courageously but was unable to overcome the growth of the cancer.
While her physical presence in our lives cannot be replaced and we miss her dearly, Alicia's passing is also a tender mercy from God and should be celebrated as such. We all look forward to being reunited with her again.
Alicia is survived by her husband, John, and seven children: David Taylor, Jeannette Overman, Susan Schunk, Bryan Taylor, Richard Taylor, Greg Taylor and Sandy Peterson. She is also survived by 30 grandchildren.
