Mr. Allan McGhee

Allan W. McGhee, 96, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on October 2, 2013 at home. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, October 7, 2013 with visitation beginning one hour prior at Asbury United Methodist Church, 5400 W. 75th Street, Prairie Village, KS. Interment will follow in the Johnson County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church.
Allan was born October 12, 1916 in Centralia, KS, oldest child of Charles F. and Minnie E. McGhee. He graduated from Centralia High School in 1934 and from Kansas State University in 1938, receiving a degree in business journalism. After graduation he was employed by the Omaha, NE World-Herald newspaper and later the Lincoln, NE State Journal. In 1940 he joined the staff of the Chicago Daily Drovers Journal, beginning a career which spanned 42 years with that firm. Starting as a reporter and photographer, he eventually became editor of the Drovers Journal and editorial director of the Corn Belt Farm Dailies, a four-paper group of publications for livestock farmers and their families. He received awards from the Livestock Publications Council, several state university animal science departments, the American Polled Hereford Assn., and the American Angus Assn. for meritorious service to the livestock industry. He was named an honorary lifetime member of the American Agricultural Editors Assn.
Allan retired in 1982 with the title of Editor Emeritus of the Drovers Journal, now issued as a cattle business publication known as "Drovers Cattle Network."
Allan and his family moved from Chicago to Overland Park in 1966 when Drovers Journal became part of the Vance Publishing Corp, agricultural division in Kansas City. He was a lifelong Methodist and joined Asbury United Methodist Church in 1968. In 1987 he wrote "The Asbury Story", the first history book of the church, marking Asbury's 35th anniversary. As a member of the church's historical committee he wrote each year an annual chronology of church events for the historical records. He was a four-term president and long-time director of Keen-Agers, an organization for seniors. He served as president of the Beacon Church school class several terms. For many years he wrote newsletters for the Shawnee Mission Color Slide Club and the Prairie Dog Camping Club.
Allan was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Naomi Burnett McGhee, who passed away in December, 2001. He is also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister as well as his granddaughter, Rebekkah (Becky) Carpenter. Survivors include one daughter, Judith Lynne McGhee Carpenter, Overland Park, KS and sister Betty Fyke, Littleton, CO and numerous nieces and nephews.
