Allen G. Bowers of John Knox Village, Lee's Summit, MO passed away Tuesday December 11, 2012 at Lee's Summit Medical Center.
Allen was born May 10, 1911 in Allen, KS to Edward and Ethel Bowers. When he was 11 months old his parents moved to Irving, KS where his father worked at the Edwards ranch. Allen attended 3 country grade schools before graduating Irving high school in 1929. As a teenager he enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing and baseball. After attending one year at University of Kansas he enlisted in the US Navy in November 1933. Allen retired after 28 years of service while stationed at the Naval Air Technical Training Command in Memphis, TN. During his sea service he serviced aboard the battleship USS California, the repair ship USS Medusa and the submarine tender USS Fulton. During WWII, while stationed aboard the USS Fulton, his ship participated in the battle of midway where they picked up 1800 survivors of the carrier USS Yorktown, which was sunk by the Japanese, and brought them back to Pearl Harbor.
In August 1941 during the commissioning of the USS Fulton where he was a plankster (first crew member), Allen took the US Navy's examination for commissioned status. As a result he was commissioned as a warrant officer on July 4, 1942 while his ship was stationed at the Island Midway. In July 1956, while assigned to the bureau of Aeronautics Representative Office at 99th and Troost, Kansas City, MO, he was promoted to the rank of Commander and served in that status until he retired , after 28 years, from the Naval service in November 1961.
Some of the areas in which Allen served while in the Navy were: The Pacific Theater, Trinidad British West Indies, Naval Air Facility, Port Lyautey, French Morocco, Africa, Bureau of Aeronautics Representative Kansas City, MO. The position he enjoyed most while serving in the US navy was Industrial Relations Officer (In charge of all civil service employees on base).
Allen was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Bowers. He is survived by his wife, Verna Bartel, his son Richard Bowers and daughter-in-law Carolyn Bowers, his sister Leota Cornelius, his grand-daughter Malissa and husband Jim Tracey, his great grand children Bejamin and Kamila Tracey.
Allen was a member of the 1st Baptist Church, Lee's Summit, MO.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, December 15th at the John Knox Village Chapel, Lee's Summit, MO. Visitation will be at 9:00 am with services at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Knox Village Foundation.
