Allen Hicks

January 29, 1950 — August 25, 2023

Lenexa

On August 25, 2023, the angels came to receive Allen Andrew Hicks, 73, and relieved his exhausted body from all the pains it endured fighting a courageous battle against cancer for over a year.

Born on January 29th, 1950 in Moses Lake, California, Allen grew up with four other siblings, Margaret, Marilyn, Marjorie and Rusty. He moved to Cheney, Washington where he attended and graduated from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor’s degree. His professional career took him across the country, from Idaho Falls, Idaho to New Orleans, Louisiana, before settling in the Kansas City metro area where he worked at URS Corporation and finally at Burns and McDonnell, from which he retired from his role as Senior Lead Construction Estimator in 2020.

It was here in Kansas City in 2010 that Allen met his beautiful wife, Julie Leong, through a mutual friend. They were both fiercely independent, and completely content with their careers and personal lives when they met. But sometimes, the universe has its way of bringing two incredible people together. After dating for four years, Allen and Julie made it official. All through the eight years of marriage, no one can deny their deep love and respect for one another. They were best friends and always had each other’s back.

When they are not traveling to fun places, dining out at their many favorite restaurants or catching a movie together, Allen was an avid golfer and loved his time with his golf buddies(which often…who are we kidding…which ALWAYS involved a drink or two of his favorite beverage, Crown on the rocks!!). He also enjoyed watching his NASCAR and Formula 1 races, local car shows, and of course, his KC Chiefs games.

Allen was also a very loving family man and along with Julie, they shared an extended family unit whom they both love unconditionally. He is survived by wife, Julie Leong-Hicks; mother-in-law, Sau Lan Leng; sisters-in-law and their spouses -Jessica Leong (Layo Gonzalez), Josephine Leong (Patrick Tan),Jackie Leong; brother-in-law, Michael Leong; and stepchildren –Sharynne Azhar, Jane Azhar and Marcus Leong (Nina Boonyasiti, fiancée).

He is also survived by his two children, daughter Kimberly Woodward (spouse Jeremy) and son Steven Hicks (spouse Jennifer); granddaughter Bridgette Woodward (who is undeniably the apple of his eye); his siblings – Margaret Blackman (deceased), Marilyn Cummins (spouse Jim), Marjorie Homberg, and Rusty Hicks (spouse Tamma); his nieces and nephews – Tamara Medrano, Shelly Strand, Eric Strand, Shauna Lindo, Brenda McBroom, Michael McBroom (deceased), Andrea Hicks, Lindsey Shelly, and Allene Hicks; and many great nieces and great nephews who loved him dearly.

Allen has brought much joy to so many of us in different ways. Let’s honor him by continuing to remember all the special happy moments we shared with him. Till we meet again, rest in peace, Allen.
