Alma Sparks

December 19, 1912 — February 5, 2013

Alma Elizabeth Sparks passed away quietly in her sleep at the age of 100 at KU Medical Center on February 5th. She was born on December 19th, 1912, in Kansas City and lived her whole life in the Rosedale neighborhood, marrying her childhood sweetheart Jack Sparks. They raised one son while Jack worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and Alma worked at Lee, sewing jeans. An expert tomato gardener and crappie fisherman, Alma turned her attention to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, after Jack died in 1979. Her family coveted her family-recipe German fruit bars every year at Christmas, and she loved to dance, being especially adept at the bunny hop. Her mind was razor sharp until the end, and she always cleaned her plate, including the last meal she had in the hospital. She is survived by her son, Jack (Marnell), Grandchildren, Rhett (Christine), Chris (Pam), Jack (Megan), and Robin, and Great-Grandchildren, Kendall, Raley, Jessa, Charles, and Abigail. Funeral Services are Monday at 11am at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave Overland Park, KS 66210, with a visitation being held the evening before on Feb. 10 from 5-7PM at the same location. The family asks for Donations in her name to the Salvation Army, 39th & Baltimore, KC, Mo, in lieu of flowers.
