Rodney Lee and Janet Mae (Sterbenz) Stevens passed away together 2 January 2011. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, 8 January 2011 at Old Mission United Methodist Church, 5519 State Park Rd., Fairway, Kansas 66202 with a reception following. A gathering of friends and family will be held from 6-8 P.M., Friday, 7 January 2011 also at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Kansas City Zoo, 6800 Zoo Dr., Kansas City, MO 64132 or to the Nuclear & Mechanical Engineering Department at Kansas State University. Janet was born 23 October 1947 in The Wichita Hospital, Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas, and was baptized 1964 in the El Dorado Methodist Church, El Dorado, Butler, Kansas. She was the daughter of William (Bill) Sterbenz and Veva Mae Souders. She graduated from El Dorado High School, El Dorado, Kansas. During high school, she developed a life long involvement in Girl Scouts. She attended Kansas State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, majoring in Dietetics and Institutional Management. She was a Registered Dietitian until moving overseas in 1993. She was an active volunteer in Girl Scouts and an overseas trainer, and a docent for the Kansas City Zoo Docents. She was an avid genealogist. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Susannah Putney chapter, El Dorado, Butler, Kansas, and a lifetime member of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
Janet was married to Rodney Lee Stevens 1 June 1969 in the El Dorado Methodist Church, after meeting while playing bridge in college. Rod was born 19 October 1948 in Anthony Hospital, Anthony, Harper, Kansas. He was the son of Raymond Edwin Stevens and Betty Louise Warren. Rod graduated from Harper High School, Harper, Harper County, as salutatorian and enjoyed playing the trumpet. He attended Kansas State University, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Tau engineering honor society. Rod was employed with Black and Veatch Consulting Engineers and Architects and was a project manager. In 1993, he was transferred to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he was the technical advisor for the construction and design of the Port Dickson Power Station, a gas turbine power plant, the first power plant in Malaysia. He was advanced to the position of Managing Director of Black and Veatch Malaysia, Snd Bhd, in 1997, and oversaw the day to day operations of Black and Veatch projects in Malaysia.
In 1997 Janet and Rod moved back to the U.S. In 2000 Rod became the Director of Southeast Asia operations for Burns & McDonnell. In 2005 they moved back to Malaysia where they were currently living.
Rod enjoyed reading and playing golf and belonged to Negara Subang Golf Club in Malaysia and was an avid K-State fan. Janet was well accomplished in needlework, lacing, quilting, knitting, tatting, and crocheting. She was a member of International Lacers of America. They both enjoyed traveling to see new countries and cultures, traveling extensively to over 40 countries. They enjoyed a full and rich life seeking and observing endangered species in their natural habitats. They loved to have friends and family come visit and show them around Malaysia.
They were members of Old Mission United Methodist Church and the Sunday School Class, the Parables, for over 30 years and have lived in the Johnson County community since they were married. They were also members of American Association of Kuala Lumper of Malaysia.
Janet and Rod were preceded in death by Janet’s parents and Rod’s father and younger brother, Wyatt Ray Stevens.
Survivors include Rodney’s mother, Betty L. Stevens; their daughter, Jann Meredith Stevens-Moore and her husband, Dr. David Scott Moore; son, Aaron Michael Stevens; grandchildren, Zoe Mae and Maxwell Conyer Moore; Janet’s brother, Kenneth W. (Bessie) Sterbenz; sister, Wanda L. Sterbenz; Rodney’s brothers, Wayne E. (Audrey) and Larry W. (Tena) Stevens; six aunts and uncles; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Rod and Janet have touched many lives throughout the world and will be greatly missed.
