Andrew Siu Ip Wong passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 19th, 2023 at the age of 66, following a long journey with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).
On July 21,1957, he and his identical twin brother were born in Hong Kong. In a household of six brothers and sisters, they grew up together in Shau Ki Wan. Early on during his teen years, he left middle school to learn how to be a chef and work in the kitchens of Hong Kong. As he desired to expand his passion and career in cooking, he traveled to Singapore to experience life outside Hong Kong while working in Singaporean restaurants. Eventually he made his way to the United States in search of the American dream.
In 1984 he met his wife in Missouri, and from then they began a life together spanning 39 years. They worked together in restaurants before opening their first restaurant business, Golden Bowl. Over the next 39 years, they would run several more restaurant businesses in the Kansas City area including Oriental Feast, Shogun Japanese Sushi and Steakhouse, New Café 32 and New Café 40. Other than his proud achievements in the restaurant industry, he and his wife raised three daughters, who eventually became first generation college graduates in the family. Through his restaurant businesses, his love of cooking delicious food for people, connecting with everyone around him made an impact on generations of families. Many stories and conversations with Andrew were shared while enjoying the food he cooked as he was always the life of the party, who loved to bring people together in all celebrations of life. He was also known for his hard work ethic, his sheer willpower, and tireless determination to be successful in his life.
When he was not working, he loved to sing karaoke, enjoyed swimming and taking trips around the world, including Vietnam, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and his birthplace Hong Kong.
Though he spent the last few years in a difficult battle with Frontotemporal Dementia, he never stopped sharing friendly waves and smiles with the people around him.
Andrew leaves behind his wife Shelly Siu Lai and daughters, Joney Hiu Yung, Jackie Hiu Kiu and Jessica Hiu Tin, and siblings Wong Kwong Fook, Wong Siu Chee, Wong Kit Man, and Wong Kit Wai.
He was preceded in death by his brother Wong Wing Hing, and his parents, Wong Poon Sing and Lee Wang Yuk.
To honor Andrew’s memory, we are holding a visitation on Tuesday September 26th, 2023 at 11:00am CST. The memorial service will begin at 12:00pm CST. Both will take place at Johnson County Funeral Chapel.
