Ann Radulovic McGahey Smith died June 22, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospice House. Ann (named Ennis at birth) was a first-generation American born to Serbian immigrants Peter and Diana Radulovic in McKeesport, PA on November 20, 1924. She was the first in her family to graduate from college and she and all of her siblings pursued advanced degrees. She married Bob McGahey in 1948 and raised their sons Bob and Rick in PA , KY, and WI before settling in Kansas City, where their daughter Lisa was born. Later they moved again, but after Bob’s death she and Lisa moved back to Kansas City, where she and Bob had spent many happy years and had a strong community of friends and faith. Years later she met and married Oak Smith, who added a happy and unexpected second chapter to her life.
Ann was blessed to experience many things that she loved throughout her long life: her children and grandchildren; travel with her husbands, her beloved sister Mickey, and friends; bridge games, dancing, and socializing; and her special home in Juno Beach, FL. She was known for her sense of humor; her elegance and sense of style; her spirited approach to life; her love and fierce loyalty to her family and her Serbian heritage; Diet Coke; and never sitting at the first table she was offered at a restaurant. She faced many difficult losses and health challenges as well, and met them all with strength and courage and faith.
She was preceded in death by loving husbands Robert L. McGahey and Oak B. Smith, brother Michael Radulovic, and sister Mildred Zateslo. She is survived by daughter Lisa McGahey Veglahn; son Richard McGahey and wife Teresa Ghilarducci; son Robert McGahey and wife Julia; grandchildren Margaret, Robbie, Genevieve, Emily, Myles, Peter, and Dawn; great-grandchildren Will, Ella, Brooks and Isiah; and brother Peter Radulovic. She was also blessed with many loving nephews, nieces, and sisters-in-law. The family held a private service but is grateful for the love and support of her family, friends, and caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice Foundation of America, 1707 L Street, NW #220, Washington, DC 20036.
