Mr. Arch Templeton M.D.
March 30, 1932 — February 23, 2016
Dr. Archibald Wallace Templeton, age 83 of Kansas City, passed away on February 23, 2016 at The University of Kansas Hospital.
Dr. Templeton is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Larson, and five children: Debra Cooper, Scott Templeton, Karen Cox, Mark Templeton, and Craig Templeton. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren: Mikael Templeton, Daniel Cox, Christina Cooper, Zachary Templeton, Mitchell Cooper, Brent Templeton, Matthew Cooper, Courtney Templeton, Ryan Templeton, Chloe Templeton, and Rachel Templeton.
Arch was born on March 30, 1932 in Madison, WI to Dr. Hugh and Ruth Templeton. Growing up in Omaha, NE, he was musically inclined earning the state chair in violin his senior year, was athletic, and was full of life. While music was always in his heart, golf became his lifelong passion where years and years were spent on driving ranges and putting greens. Hardly a day passed without thought of his swing and ways to improve it. This same dedication and drive for excellence also propelled his professional life.
After earning his medical degree in 1957 from the University of Nebraska, he completed his internship at Lima Memorial Hospital in Lima, Ohio and then his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit in 1961. Before arriving at The University of Kansas Hospital in 1968, he spent time at the U.S. Naval Dispensary in Norfolk, VA, Washington University in St. Louis, and at the University of Missouri. Dr. Templeton then spent 25 years as the chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at The University of Kansas Hospital. Although “retired”, he continued to teach radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina and practice throughout South Carolina. He was known as an expert in his field, published countless papers, and was widely respected for his passion to be the best.
In his retirement in Charleston and Aiken, SC, he continued his relentless refining of his golf game, enjoyed the ocean and fishing with family, served on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army in Aiken and the Advisory Council for the Boys and Girls Club, and became an avid art collector.
As a father and grandfather, the love he had in his heart was truly never ending as was his hope that each child/grandchild obtain the same success and joy for life he experienced. In his final words he expressed his extreme pride and love of all five children.
Services will be held on March 5, 2016 at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 with a service to follow at 11:00. The family invites everyone to a small reception at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the KU Endowment, 3901 Rainbow Boulevard, Mail Stop 3012, Kansas City, KS 66160, to benefit the Arch W.
