Archie Darrell Clement, age 71, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on April 27, 2012. He was born on October 16, 1940 in Maud, OK, the son of Effie Opal (Rogers) and Troy David Clement. Survivors include his wife, Sigrid Clement, daughter, Jackie Mayhew and husband Steve Mayhew, son, John Clement and wife Susan Clement and four granddaughters: Taylor Mayhew, Cortney Mayhew, Rose Clement and Catherine Clement, sisters Betty Allen and Wanda Snell and a brother William D. Clement.
Darrell graduated from Fort Hays State in 1963 with a Master's degree in History and later gained his Education Administration certification. His desire to impact teenagers' lives in Northwest, KS led to a career in high school education spanning 33 years, teaching social studies in Bird City, KS from 1963 to 1967 and then Oakley, KS from 1967 to 1993. From 1993 until his retirement in 1996, he served as Principal of Oakley High School.
In addition to teaching, school athletics were an important part of Darrell's life. He coached Cross-Country, Basketball, and Track. In 1970 and 1971, he coached the boys' 2A state champion Cross-Country team. As OHS Athletic Director, Darrell was a familiar figure within high school athletics throughout Northwest, KS.
Darrell was a member, Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder of Oakley Christian Church and was active in the formation of SouthWoods Christian Church in Overland Park, KS. After moving to Overland Park, KS he become an active member of SouthWoods Christian Church and served as director of the church food pantry for low-income individuals and families.
Family was an important part of Darrell's life he enjoyed spending time with his own family, especially attending his granddaughters' sporting events and activities. Other interests included reading, fishing, country music, and caring for his dogs.
Memorial Services will be held at 5:00 PM, Saturday, May 5, 2012 at SouthWoods Christian Church, 16110 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66085. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Inurnment will be held in the Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to SouthWoods Christian Church Food Pantry or to the City Union Mission in Kansas City.
