Arthur Wilson Jr.

November 24, 1929 — January 27, 2016

Arthur F. (Sonny) Wilson Jr., 86, Kansas City, KS, passed away Jan. 27, 2016 with his wife Deloris L. Wilson by his side. He was born Nov. 24, 1929 in Salina, KS to Arthur F. Wilson Sr. and Maxine Wilson.

Arthur (Art/Sonny) was a man of many hats. He married Deloris L. Brennaman on Nov. 25, 1950 in Garden City, KS. Art graduated from Salina High School in Salina, KS in 1947. He received an Associate’s Degree in Education from Garden City Community College. As a teacher, he taught all subjects in grade 5-8 and coached basketball. Some of the other hats he wore in his 16yr’s of broadcasting were radio announcing and disc jockey newscaster, ad sales, and designed marketing campaigns. Arthur covered the trial Hickock and Smith, the convicted killers of the Herb Clutter family in Holcomb, KS. While he was the news director covering 5 counties, he interviewed the director of “In Cold Blood” Richard Brooks, and was selected to represent regional television stations to be a witness of the executions of Hickock and Smith. Art worked in organization management assisting elected boards in developing budgets and programs of work, he was successful in motivating membership and consulted successfully in economic development with existing businesses and attracting new job opportunities in communities. Sonny consulted with groups in education, housing, and crime resistance. He also worked with at risk youth in boxing programs all over Kansas.

Arthur was a very giving man who taught his children and others that kindness solves more than hate and that one smile can make the biggest difference in a life so “Keep Smiling”.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Maxine Wilson; sisters, Betty Lee Howard and Maryann Biggerstait.

He is survived by his wife, Deloris Wilson; children, Chelle Wilson, Mona (Dale) Petty, Charles Wilson, Mary (Tom) Strat, Sandra (Gary) Kniffin, Melanie Jones; 10 grandkids, 14 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson; and his brother Charles Wilson.
