Dr. Ashford Martin Galbreath Jr., 76, Overland Park, KS, passed away on January 27, 2010. Ashford was born August 10, 1933, to Ashford M. Sr. and Verena Galbreath, who preceded him in death.
Ashford was a lifelong Kansas City resident graduating from Central High School in 1951. He was a member of the Webster Literary Society. Ashford was involved with the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout and member of the Mic-O-Say Tribe. Upon graduating high school, Ashford attended Kansas City Metropolitan Junior College and then went to the University of Kansas graduating with a B.S. in 1955. After receiving his Bachelor of Science, Ashford went on to obtain his medical degree from University of Kansas graduating in 1959. He completed his residency in internal medicine. Ashford established his practice in Kansas City and continued to be in practice for 40 plus years. He was on the medical staff at Research Medical Center for the majority of his medical career. Ashford was a member of the American Medical Association. Ashford served as a Major in the Air Force Reserves from 1964 until he was Honorably Discharged in August 1977.
Ashford was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and spending vacations in Colorado. Ashford loved history and learning about the Native Americans. Ashford enjoyed reading, watching KU sports and in later years watching soccer. Ashford was a generous, compassionate, caring and loving man. He was very family oriented and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Ashford is preceded in death by his brother, William Lawrence, and a daughter-in-law, Deanna. Ashford is survived by his wife, Claudene Galbreath and his three children, Ashford A. Galbreath (Maggie), Troy, Michigan, Barbara Galbreath Sharp (Tony Robertson) Overland Park, KS, and Dr. David A. Galbreath (Lisa) Leawood, KS. Ashford was a loving grandfather to seven grandchildren, Ashford Andrew, Alexander, Monica, Christopher, Ian, Meghan and Brendan. He had two step-grandchildren, Ahmad and Suzanna and three and a half great grandchildren, Michayla, Isabella and Helena with one great grandchild on the way. He leaves behind his spoiled beloved cat and his grand dogs and grand cat. He is survived by his stepmother, Collene Galbreath, along with his sister Audrey (Lloyd) Lavely, his sister-in-law, Joyce Galbreath, his brother-in-law, Boyce Dougherty (Shirley), 10 nieces and nephews and his cousins.
A gathering of Ashford's family and friends will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2010, at DW Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas 66210. A celebration of Ashford's life will be held at The Village Presbyterian Church located at 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas 66208, on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to The Village Presbyterian Church or The American Heart Association.
