Our beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend, Barbara Dee Bailey, 67, of Overland Park, KS. (Formerly Grandview, Mo.) went home to be with our lord on August 21, 2011 surrounded by her family. Barb was preceded in death by her mother Lois, her father Fletch, and her brother Carl. She leaves behind her loving husband Gary, her daughter Deanna, her sons Doug, Don and David, sister Linda Stoltzfus, brother Darrell Cossairt, 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Barb had an enormous love of family, including a strong sense of tradition. Holiday gatherings were the highlight of her year and she made certain the menu included all the traditional favorites, and even who was assigned to bring each dish. She had many funny stories of decorating the Christmas tree. Barb was proud of her children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, continually inquired about their health and status and how they were doing in school.
Throughout her life Barb faced many challenges, the most recent being a stroke that made it difficult for her to communicate. Despite all these challenges Barb maintained a fine sense of humor and ability to laugh at herself. Early in her life Barb enjoyed a drink and a cigarette, and a strong cup of coffee and a cigarette, and a good joke and a cigarette. She gave up alcohol many years ago but held on to the coffee, cigarettes and sense of humor until the end.
Barb was an avid sports fan with the K.C. Chiefs, the Royals, and K.U. being her favorite teams. Summers would find her sporting Royals Blue and Autumn Sunday’s would find her decked out in red in front of the TV. Barb liked to fish and loved to watch the birds, especially hummingbirds.
Barb was fascinated with dragonflies which provided family and friends a theme for gifts late in life. Barb loved her dragonfly necklaces and jewelry, and adorned her home with many displays of dragonflies. As a gift, Barb was presented a metal flower pot with dragon flies and plastic flowers. The stroke she suffered had also affected her eyesight. Barb was found watering the plastic flowers, concerned that they might die. Barb was concerned she was watering the flowers too much, and when it was pointed out the flowers were made of plastic, we all had a good laugh, Barb included.
Barb was a spiritual person with a strong faith in God. Church was important to her and she admired many of the pastors she came in contact with. Reverend Neal Hiatt, pastor Randy Nelson, and JanKeeler were a few of the pastors that had an impact on her faith. She was especially proud of David, and supported his path to God throughout his youth and later in life.
After the stroke, Barb received exceptional care from family and friends. Deanna was always there for her and spent countless hours taking care of her mother. Linda took Barb to many appointments, and brought food and comfort, ironed and cleaned. Throughout this period Gary was the foundation that Barb depended upon. He was the person who listened when she complained. Gary’s dedication and commitment through this difficult period is appreciated by Barb’s family.
