Barbara Ellen Corkran, 47, passed away April 13, 2015 at Olathe Medical Center Hospice House. Born April 16, 1967 to Jan and Keith Corkran she spent most of her childhood on the family farm near Stanley, Kansas. Barbara’s early schooling included Montessori and sign language. She graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1985. Throughout her early years she participated in Special Olympics including basketball, track, swimming and coaching.
Barbara resided in various locations of the Bethesda Lutheran communities for 27 years. During this period she worked in the Johnson County Developmental Support Closed Workshop in various capacities. Her favorite activities were family gatherings, swimming, teaching people sign language, hugging, giggling, teasing and traveling. Barbara knew no stranger by introducing herself with a hand shake and then saying “I am Barbara Corkran”, followed by hug. She loved babies, small children and puppies. Food also brought her great enjoyment, especially cheese burgers and fries.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Janice Hall and step-mother Marilyn Corkran. She is survived by her father, Keith Corkran; siblings, Debbie Sawyer (Jack), Dan Corkran (Jamie); step-siblings, Mark Carson (Janet), Greg Carson (April), Jana Lathrop (Pat); along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the many staff members assisting Barbara from the Bethesda Lutheran Communities, the Olathe Hospice staff and to the numerous kind police officers and firemen that she encountered along the way.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas. A gathering of family and friends will begin at 10:00AM, Saturday, also in the chapel. A private family inurnment will take place.
