Benjamin Dwight Whitehead, O.D. of Overland Park, Kansas was born July 5, 1917 in Kansas City, Missouri to Joseph and Florabelle (Needles) Whitehead and died at Menorah Hospital on February 9, 2010. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 16 at 1:00 pm at the D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.
Dr. Whitehead was an optometrist in and around Kansas City for more than fifty years. He practiced in the Bryant Building in downtown Kansas City for thirty years and then Montgomery Ward and Sears until he retired at the young age of 82.
He was a sports enthusiast at Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri. He lettered in track, specializing in the high jump and hurdles. He also lettered in football. Ben enjoyed fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks and Lake of the Woods in Canada.
Dr. Whitehead was preceded in death by his wife Kay Kristine Miller. Survivors include a brother Sam Whitehead of Whiteville, North Carolina, nephew, David Eichenberger of Tampa, Florida, his nieces; Linda and Rita Whitehead of Whiteville, North Carolina, Christie Whitehead of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a sister, Margaret Smith of Scottsdale, Arizona and stepson Ralph Miller of Overland Park, Kansas.
