Betty R. Barry passed away on October 2, at St. Joseph Medical Center. Burial will be by cremation. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, visitation will begin at 10 a.m. prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Village Presbyterian Church or the Kansas City Hospice in care of the funeral home. Mrs. Barry was born in Kansas City, Mo., but lived her formative years in Lincoln, Neb. She attended the University of Nebraska, were she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority graduating with a bachelor of arts and sciences degree in speech and English. While there, she met her future husband, John "Jack" Harold Barry. The couple married in 1941 while he was a lieutenant in the Army. She accompanied Jack to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. They resided there at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Mrs. Barry returned to Kansas City while here husband continued to serve in the Army. She was employed by Hallmark Cards for a number of years. She later joined the staff of the Prairie Village City Hall and retired from that position in 1982. Mrs. Barry was a 50-year member of the Village Presbyterian Church, where she taught church school classes and volunteered at the food bank. She enjoyed volunteering a number of places, including as an usher at the Johnson County Community College Cultural Center and as a teacher for the Johnson County Library's Project Finish. She was also a member of Lambda Tau Delta philanthropic sorority. Mrs. Barry is survived by her son John Rowland Barry and his wife Cindy; grandson John Richard Barry and his wife Kim; great grandson Cade Matthew Barry; sister Frankie Stealey and her husband Larry; several nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.
