Betty Jean (McCracken) Lewis, 81, of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, died unexpectedly on Sunday, December 30, 2012, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. All of us are absolutely heartbroken. She was the type of person you expected to outlive everyone else.
Betty was born October 29, 1931 in Kansas City, and was in the same nursery at the same time as the future love of her life, her husband of 62 years, John "Bud" Lewis. Betty met Bud at age 16, when her friends dared her to kiss the next boy who walked down the street. Thankfully, it was Bud, and they have never been apart since. Theirs is a love story for the ages.
Betty was the strong and loving matriarch of the Lewis and Marshall families and truly lived her life for Bud and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A mother hen extraordinaire, there was nothing more important to Betty than her family, and she was involved in our lives on a daily basis. Betty and Bud found great joy and comfort in raising their family and extended family and were proud of each and every one of us. She and Bud have been everyone's Grandma Betty & Grandpa Bud (Poppy), whether they were family or not.
Everyone in the family loved and depended on Betty for so much, and she thrived on that. She was a ball of fire, a physically-active dynamo who insisted on doing things herself, age being no barrier or excuse. She had an uncanny sixth sense when it came to her family. She always seemed to know things even before we did, so we never had much luck keeping things from her. She loved picking up the great-grandkids from school and watching their sporting events. Betty was also a big Jayhawks basketball fan.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Amelia McCracken. She is survived by her husband, Bud, of the home; daughter Sharon (Alan) Marshall of Prairie Village; son Ron (Denise) Lewis of Lenexa; five grandchildren: Michelle (Jim) King of Lenexa; Janelle (Dave) Jonas of Shawnee; Staci (Gabe) Johnson of Gardner; Mindy (Craig) Cox of Shawnee; and Adam Lewis of Lawrence; and nine great-grandchildren: Alexis Marshall, Abby King, Hailey Marshall, Marisa Ward, Brendan Jonas, Colton King, Kylee Marshall, Caiden Cox and Eliana Johnson. Betty is also survived by her brother, Donald (Grace) McCracken of Overland Park, and their loving family.
There will be a private graveside service for family only at Betty's request. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
