Mr. "Bill" Winship Abbott

William "Bill" Winship Abbott, 82, of Leawood, KS passed away September 5, 2013. William was born January 12, 1931 in Kansas City, MO to William T. and Sue M. Abbott. He graduated from Westport High in Kansas City where he was on the yearbook and newspaper staff. William then went on to attend Park College in Parkville, MO where he starred in the play "Goodbye My Fancy". He met his wife while serving with the Air Force in Great Britain in the 1950's.
William trained as a radio announcer at KCUR-FM (K.C. University, now UMKC) and spent 39 years in radio broadcasting. He had part and full-time work that included news director of KEWI, Topeka, personality at KCKN AM/FM and 28 years at WDAF-AM (61 Country) both in Kansas City. He was known as Brother Bill (the Abbott Habit). In 1970, Bill was selected by Billboard magazine as one of the Top 25 major market disc jockeys. William retired as an account manager from Informix Software Inc. in Lenexa, KS in 1996.
William had a strong interest in cartooning that began when he was a child. His favorite cartoonist was Milton Caniff, creator of Terry and the Pirates, who provided him with an autographed original strip.
William is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his sons, Brett C. (Leawood, KS) and Tony D. (Kearney, MO) and daughter Suzette K. (Littleton, CO), as well as three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, September 14, 2013 with visitation beginning one hour prior at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Rolling Acres Memorial Gardens for Pets, PO Box 12073, Kansas City, MO 64152 or Wayside Waifs, 3901 Martha Truman Road Kansas City, MO 64137.
