Blanche Marie Garrett, 94, of Prairie Village, KS passed away surrounded by her family at her home on October 30, 2012. She will forever be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. The youngest of four children, Blanche was born on January 24, 1918 on the family farm in McLouth, KS to Michael Martin and Floy Jane (Boyd) Zachariah.
She graduated from McLouth High School in 1936 as its Valedictorian and attended the University of Kansas and Kansas State Teachers College. She taught four years at the Jefferson County Elementary School.
In December of 1941, Blanche married John V. Garrett, Jr. of McLouth, KS and accompanied him to various Army posts across the country until the end of WWII. After returning home, John and Blanche moved to Excelsior Springs, MO and she became Worthy Matron of the Excelsior Chapter 168 Order of the Eastern Star.
In 1955 they moved to Kansas City where she was a member of Cherokee Christian Church serving as a Deacon and a member of Lambda Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi where she was elected to the council. She was a homemaker and worked at IRS as a Tax Examiner for 10 years. Blanche loved her family, playing bridge, square dancing and the farm.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 50 years and her oldest daughter, Karen Elaine, who passed away in 1951. She was also preceded in death by three siblings, LeRoy, Kenneth, and Leona Zachariah, all of McLouth, KS.
She leaves two daughters, Debra Joleen Shaffett and husband Dennis of Lenexa, KS and Lori Lea Bedford of Prairie Village, KS and two granddaughters Kayla Michelle Bedford and Alexis Morgan Bedford of Orland Park. Ill.
A visitation will be held from 11:30 am – 1 pm Saturday, November 3, 2012 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel with service to follow at 1 pm. Graveside Services will follow in McLouth Cemetery in McLouth, KS at 3:30 PM.
