Brian Collins, age 57, of Overland Park, KS passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2010. Private family services were held at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, with burial in D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Collins was born on May 29, 1952 in Kansas City, KS. He was the son of Joseph H. Collins and Doris J. (Clark) Collins. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, 5th and Nebraska Avenue, Kansas City, KS, where he was baptized on September 23, 1962. Brian was a graduate of Sumner High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Kansas State University, in Manhattan, KS and a Masters Degree in Education from Kansas University, in Lawrence, KS. Brian taught the sixth grade at Belinder Elementary from 1974 until his retirement in 2007. He received the Award of Excellence, honoring his 33 year career in education in the Shawnee Mission Public School System, along with a plaque and certificate in appreciation for Outstanding Service to Shawnee Mission Public Schools. In addition, Brian received a Certificate of Appreciation, honoring his retirement following many years of dedication to his students and to the teaching profession, from the Kansas National Education Association, where he served on the Executive Board. He also received an award for Excellence in Preservation Education from the American Institute of Architects, Kansas and the Kansas Preservation Alliance. Brian was listed in the 1994 edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
Brian was preceded in death by his parents. He is sorrowfully mourned by his sisters, Tamara H. Collins, of New York City and Monica M. Collins, of Overland Park, KS; and stepbrother, Joseph H. Collins, Jr. and family in Tucson, AZ.
