Bruce Edward Roach, age 67, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away July 13, 2007, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Bruce was born on August 19, 1939, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Herold and Marguerite Roach. Bruce graduated from Wichita West High School in 1957 and Pittsburg State University (PSU) in 1962. While attending PSU, he was a four-year varsity football letterman and a member of the 1957 and 1961 NAIA National Championship teams. After graduation, Bruce was commissioned in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant, where he completed both Airborne and Ranger training at Fort Benning, Georgia. While at Fort Benning, he also served as a Ranger instructor and played football for the Army's Fort Benning Doughboys. In 1966, he moved to the Kansas City area where he worked as a teacher, coach and administrator at Shawnee Mission South High School until his retirement in 1998. Bruce cherished his 32 years of service at Shawnee Mission South High School, where he continually strove to create an environment of education excellence. Bruce approached everything he did in life with a high amount of energy and passion. He was an avid sports enthusiast who especially enjoyed following local high school, college and professional football. Nothing, however, took the place of the love he had for his entire family.
