Bryan Brooks (Buckey) Walters, 93 of Overland Park, KS died April 17, 2016 at Kansas City Hospice House. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm, Monday April 25,2016 at Country Club United Methodist Church. 400 W 57th St KC, Mo 64113. Mr. Walters was born in Sandborn, IN. He grew up and was schooled in Indianapolis. He held a BS degree, with "Honors in Journalism" from Butler University, Indianapolis. His senior year he was editor of the Butler Collegian graduating in 1948. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and was listed in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities" the same year. Buckey completed 28 and 1/2 years in the Naval Reserve. He served 3 and 1/2 years during WWII. He saw action in three invasions in the European theater and three invasions in the Pacific conflict. He was assigned to a Naval flag ship which sank during a typhoon in Buckner Bay, Okinawa. Recalled to active duty for the Korean War, he served as Operations Officer aboard a Landing Ship Tank vessel. His two year assignment included, among other destinations, a trip 500 miles above the Arctic Circle to Thule, Greenland. Buckey spent 15 years as a Radio and Television Personality in broadcast stations in the East and mid-west. He retired from broadcasting in 1963, after 7 years in Kansas City at KMBC radio and TV. A life-time member of the Musicians Union, Buckey played piano, organ, celesta, trumpet and drums. Buckey played trumpet with both the Shortridge High School marching band and the marching band at Butler University in Indianapolis. He wrote the words and music and produced many of the musical jingles heard on radio here and in Canada during the 50's and 60's. A comedy partnership, working supper clubs and night clubs with Soupy Sales, ended when he was recalled to active duty with the Navy for the Korean War. Buckey, who held a Real Estate License for 32 years in both KS and MO., was a purchasing agent for Yellow Freight in the land and building department, retiring in 1991. His book, "How To Buy or Sell A Business”, was first published in 1974, and sold worldwide through the Wall Street Journal. Mr. Walters, was an avid writer of poetry. Some of his poems over the years were published in a variety of publications. Buckey was an active member of Country Club United Methodist Church for 60 years, serving in many offices of responsibility and trust. Buckey’s greatest joy was his family. He and his wife Phyllis Dean Walters, married on September 1, 1950 and to quote Buckey: “It has been sensational since the day that I met her. Sixty-five years of fun and sharing”. They have traveled extensively throughout the world without benefit of guide, tour or cruise. Sometimes with their children, sometimes without they have bare-boat sailed Cape Cod, Long Island Sound, Chesapeake Bay, Nassau and the Virgin Islands. Buckey loved to sail. Buckey is survived by his wife Phyllis, his son Bryan Brooks Walters III, Overland Park, daughter Tracey Walters-Goforth, husband, Dano, granddaughter Christi Walters, Morrison, CO and his sister Peggy Schwader, husband Dale, Leawood KS.
