Buford Allen, 91, of Merriam, KS, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Buford was born on November 16, 1921 to Ollie and Minnie Allen in Oklahoma City, OK. He grew up and attended school in Kansas City, KS and graduated from Sumner High School. He continued his education by attending University of North Carolina where he received a full ride scholarship to play basketball.
He was drafted into the United States Army-Air Force, where he was trained at the Tuskegee University as a pilot. He served in the WWII. In 2007 he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
He married Margaret Farley in 1946, after marriage they made their home in Merriam, KS. Margaret preceded him in death in 2003.
Buford was a member of the Open Door Baptist Church for over 30 years; he also served as a Deacon for the church. He also served on the Merriam planning commission and was involved in the community development. He was very involved in any project that would help improve the community.
He enjoyed riding his Harley Motorcycle and playing basketball. Buford was on various basketball teams throughout his life until he was 83.
He is preceded in death by his wife Margaret Allen, one daughter, Brenda Beck, his parents, two sisters, Minnie Ole Boyd, and Juanita Riggins, one brother Steve Allen.
He is survived by one daughter Margaret Burroughs, one beloved grandson Ron Wilkins-Burroughs, several nieces and nephews and his beloved Airedale Courage.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at Open Door Baptist Church, 3033 N. 103rd Terrace, Kansas City, KS 66109.
Interment will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 9 am to 10 am on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the church.
