Carl R. Yessen, 95, of Overland Park, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2013 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
He was born on September 23, 1918 in Latham, MO to Clem and Hattie Jane (Williams) Yessen. In 1920 he moved to Sedalia, MO., and graduated from Smith-Cotton High School.
He married Mary Ruth McMullin in 1940. They made their home in Sedalia where they lived and were blessed with five children.
Carl worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad from 1942 to 1958. He spent two years in the United States Naval Air Forces from 1944 to 1946.
Carl then attended Central Missouri University at Warrensburg, MO. He graduated in 1962 receiving a bachelor's and master's degrees in education.
He taught American History and English at Shawnee Mission East for 21 years, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the Nall Avenue Baptist Church, where he and Mary served in various capacities for many years. He is preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Martha, eight siblings

He is survived by his wife Mary Ruth Yessen; four children, Nancy (Dale) Schwartz, Curtis (Susie) Yessen, Sara McQuaid and Julie (David) Stewart; twelve grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 PM on Monday, December 30, 2013 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons – Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210
