Carma Sue Rouchka, 74, passed away Friday, February 7, 2014, at Lakeview Village.
Carma was born April 20, 1939, in Reinbeck, IA, to Max and Delvina Clingan. Her parents were sharecroppers, which meant they paid the rent on the farm with crops. Carma had cows, pigs, sheep, cats, dogs and lots of horses. Carma and her beloved horse, Rhonda Saffel, were inseparable and she spent most of her time riding with her on the farm and in the woods. She was a wonderful equestrian and competed on Rhonda in barrel racing at a 4H competition. She was so beautiful in her salmon colored cowboy shirt and white hat. She graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School. When Robert, at age 16, came to live with Carma and David, Robert gave Carma what she always wanted, to be a mother and later Grandmother to Kyle. Carma and David loved to have Kyle sometimes spend weekends with them and Carma would make Kyle his favorite food, her special lasagna. Carma and David loved to play with and take care of both Robert and Kyle.
Carma's mother always had the holiday dinners and later when she moved into an apartment and could no longer handle the dinners, Carma took over and made every holiday so special with her great food and decorating their home and table with exquisite flowers from her gardens and yard. Carma loved living in the country and so enjoyed her many gardens. She had a shade garden, quiet garden, English country garden, vegetable garden and many lilac, forthyia, climantis, and hostas, plantings.
Carma's holiday dinners were always so fun with many relatives including David's parents, Pete and Aretta Rouchka. Carma always made a beautiful molded fruit salad and one time just at the end of dinner, it collapsed and we all laughed.
When Carma developed Parkinson's, David took such loving care of her. Sharyn always told him he was her hero because he went beyond what any human could do. When he could no longer care for her, her son, Robert arranged for her to go to Lakeview Village who took such loving care of her. For the first two years, David went to Lakeview every day and sat with her, fed her and loved her for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week until she no longer recognized him.
Carma and David had a wonderful marriage. They enjoyed each other so much and would watch TV, (they enjoyed the car racing) listened to music, talked and played with their cats, Sam Sam and Bam Bam and later Cee Cee that Robert got for them to help give them some much need joy.
Carma will be missed by all those she touched, especially her sister and immediate family.
A very special thank you to the staff of Crossroads Hospice and Lakeview Village. You gave us such comfort in the loving way you cared for Carma.
Carma is survived by her husband of 54 years, David Rouchka; son, Robert Rouchka; daughter, Karla Buckner; and sister, Sharyn Tigerstrom.
