Carolyn D. Hammond, 81, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Kansas City Hospice House.
Carolyn was born in Hoisington, Kansas, on July 30, 1932, to Dean and Orpha Hammond. She was an only child and was raised in Great Bend, KS. Her grandmother, Nancy Hammond, played an important role during her childhood. After attending the University of Kansas, she was employed by AT&T in Kansas City. While there she met Dorothy "Dot" Gnaegy who would become her dearest, lifelong friend and housemate for 50 years of their lives. She was preceded in death by each of these important people. After 31 years of service at AT&T, she retired.
Upon leaving AT&T, Carolyn carried her enthusiastic work ethic into her retirement bringing passion and love to everything she accomplished. She adored animals of all kinds and did so many things to help insure their survival and proper treatment. In addition to gathering an extensive collection of Wee Forest Folk, she spent the last 28 years of her life as a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Her passion to share her personal experience, strength and hope offered guidance, support and love to thousands of recovering alcoholics. The relationships she developed over her lifetime will leave a favorable impression on many hearts.
A memorial service and inurnment will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 21st, 2014, at D.W. Newcomer's Funeral Home at 11200 Metcalf Ave in Overland Park, KS.
Memorial contributions may be made to Atchison Valley Hope or the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.
