Charles William Jensen, 76, of Overland Park, Kan., passed away July 11, 2010, at Kansas City Hospice House.
Charles was born July 21, 1933, to Carl and Ruth Jensen of Monte Vista, Colo. Growing up, he attended Lutheran Elementary and Middle School. He graduated from Monte Vista High School in 1951. Following high school, he was in the United States Air Force. He served four years stationed out of Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska.
After the service Charles attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan. This is where he met his wife of 49 years, Annette. Here he received a bachelor’s in music education. He continued his education by earning a master's in vocal pedagogy from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., and a master's in library science from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.
Mr. Jensen impacted many lives through teaching. His work history includes: choral and band instructor at Beattie, Kan., and Washington, Kan., music professor at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., choral instructor at Hillsboro and Salina, Kan., and was the librarian at Edwardsville Elementary School in Edwardsville, Kan.
His hobbies included participating in church choir (either as a director or participant); he was the choir director at Community Covenant Church from 1990-2000, participating in community chorals (KC Symphony Chorale), community theater (Theatre in the Park Kansas City, Salina Community Theater), building and flying radio controlled airplanes, donuts, and tinkering with small appliances.
He was known for having the most amazing laugh and a great sense of humor. When Chuck was tickled about something so was everyone else. He was full of great stories and tall tales. He will be remembered as joyful, encouraging and caring.
Survivors include his wife, Annette Jensen; two daughters, Julie McLean and Kendra and husband Jeff Allen; three grandchildren, Faith McLean, Gabrielle Allen and Donovan Allen, and a sister, Evelyn Nehring.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Community Covenant Church, 15700 W. 87th St., Parkway, Shawnee Mission, KS 66219. Entombment will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 16, at Johnson County Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Kansas City Hospice House.
