Charles "Charlie" Edwin Meek died May 12, 2016 at 89 surrounded by his family. A celebration of his life will be 2:00pm Sunday May 15, 2016 at Brookdale of Overland Park, 6101 w. 119th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Charlie may be made to Friends of Art at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art or charity of choice.
Charlie was born February 12, 1927 in Kansas City, MO, to Marvin Leroy, Sr. and Elizabeth Ellie Farnsworth. He was raised by his grandmother, Florence Jenny Campbell Meek. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dolores Maynette Meek.
Charlie was a loving father and grandfather. He had four children: David Meek (Vicki); Daniel Meek, deceased (Jana); Christine Fischer (Fred); and Cathy Chapman (Mark). He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Kate (James Sydney), Daniel, Paul, Rosemary, John (Katie), Hannah, and Claire.
During his life, Charlie lived in Chicago, IL; Galion, OH; Kingsport, TN; and Leawood, KS. Charlie attended the Art Institute of Chicago after serving in the army during WWII. He worked as a technical illustrator at several companies including North Electric in Ohio and was a Lions Club member. Charlie was a longtime member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church in Kingsport, TN, and he was active as an art instructor at the Renaissance Center. Over several years, he created drawings in support of United Way.
He loved coming back home to Kansas later in life. Charlie lived at Brookdale 119 in Overland Park and made many friends. While living there he sang in the choir, took computer classes, and enjoyed group outings -- particularly the symphony. He continued to produce art, including portraits and still lifes. Charlie's favorite activities included the KS art fairs, First Fridays, the library, movies, The Kauffman Center, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and of course his "boys in blue," those World Champion Royals.
Charlie had a robust laugh, and he loved life and meeting new people. He had a deep faith and left an impact on every heart he encountered. Charlie Meek was simply a gift: a rare man who leaves people better for having known him. All members of his family will strive to be more like him daily.
Thank you Brookdale staff, K.C. Hospice, and caring friends. Charlie would be best remembered in the following ways: tell your family you love them, share a good story, thank your nurses and caretakers and remember to pray.
