Charles E. Mengel, 77, of Overland Park passed away October 11, 2008.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 14, 2008 from 1-2 pm at D. W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS, with service following at 2pm. Burial at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Kansas City Cancer Center, Greater Kansas City Community Foundation 1055 Broadway, Ste. 130 Kansas City, MO 64105 or United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Avenue, Leawood, KS 66224.

Dr. Mengel was born November 29, 1931 in Baltimore, MD, the son of Dr. Charles L. and Anna A. Mengel. He was raised in Allentown, PA and graduated in 1953 from Lafayette College in Easton, PA and in 1957 from John Hopkins School of Medicine. After completing medical training at John Hopkins Hospital, Duke University Medical Center and the National Cancer Institute, he held successive faculty appointments in the medical schools at Duke University, Ohio State University, University of Missouri, Columbia and the University of Kansas. He retired in 1998.

Dr. Mengel was a nationally prominent physician, educator and researcher. He was regularly listed among the ?Best Physicians? in the U.S. and in Who?s Who in America. He had received many awards for his teaching and influenced the training of medical students, residents and fellows. He served on many national medical advisory boards and authored numerous research publications and a textbook on diseases of the blood.

Dr. Mengel is survived by his wife, Paula P. Mengel, Overland Park, KS; daughters, Cheryl L. Williams, Joplin, MO and Carol A. Mavrakis, Chicago, IL; sons, Gregory J. Mengel, St. Joseph, MO, Scott A. Mengel, Medford, NJ and Michael D. Mengel, Overland Park, KS and 11 grandchildren.
