Dr. Charles D. Miles, 86, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away at his home Saturday, April 6, 2013.
Charles was born to Chester and Roma Miles on August 11, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri. As a boy, Charles lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Liberty, Missouri before his family permanently relocated to Kansas City. Charles was a World War II veteran who served in the 3rd US Army in Europe from November 1944 to August 1946. He received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Kansas, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. All degrees were in zoology.
Charles served as an Assistant Professor of Biology at Eureka College in Illinois from 1961 to 1964. He then had a 28-year career in the Biology Department at the University of Missouri, Kansas City (UMKC). He was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society of Sigma Xi, the American Society of Parasitologists, the American Malacological Union and the Missouri Academy of Science. He published a number of scientific articles in American and European journals and was awarded 4 outstanding teaching awards during his career. He retired from UMKC in 1992 as professor emeritus.
In addition to his professional career, Charles found time to be active in both Cub and Boy Scouts, for whom he served as an assistant Den Father as well as a Merit Badge counselor. He also coached Cub Scout baseball when both his boys were active in the sport.
Charles was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Virginia (Sandy) Miles from Troy, Kansas, and his brother, James H. Miles, of Liberty, Missouri. He is survived by his son Dr. William Miles (the late Dr. Michele Raible) of Birmingham, Michigan, son David Miles (Susan Miles), and grandson Anthony Miles, all of Overland Park, Kansas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Charles influenced an entire generation of scientific learners and he leaves behind scores of teachers, physicians and many others to whom he taught an appreciation of the wonders of the natural world. He will be missed not only by these former students but by his family and many friends.
A funeral service for Charles will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons – Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS. There will be a private family burial at a later date at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2013, at the Johnson County Chapel.
