Chauncey V. Rice, age 87 of Overland Park, KS passed away on December 28th, 2014. Chauncey was born September 13, 1927 in Cheyenne, OK to Chauncey V. and Muriel Dugger Rice. Chauncey lived in Cheyenne, OK until the age of 15 when they moved to Plainview, KS. He graduated from Plainview High School early to enlist in the US Navy during WWII. He served from April 1945-August 1946 as Seaman First Class. Following the service he attended Wichita State University and graduated in June 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
Chauncey married Joyce Furr on March 19, 1960 in Wichita, KS and have been married for 54 years and have celebrated many special memories with their three daughters and their families. He loved his family and family gatherings. Especially Christmas in Hammon, family reunions and times together, laughing, singing and playing games.
He worked numerous jobs as an accountant/auditor. Due to his love of music he played the trumpet throughout school and in the Boeing Band and he enjoyed singing with the Heart of America SPEBSQSA ( Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. ) Wichita, Lincoln, and Kansas City Chapters and church choirs. He was also active with Kiwanis of Old Mission and American Legion Dwight Cowles Post 370 of Overland Park, KS. He was a faithful member of East Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita, KS and Old Mission United Church in Fairway, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Muriel and Chauncey Rice, brother, James and sister-in-law, Eileen Rice, sisters Helen Marie Mueller and Carroll Edgell.
Chauncey is survived by his wife, Joyce, three daughters, Alicia Kannard (Kevin), Cindy Svec (Robert), Nancy Laflin (Troy), seven grand children; Justin and Janna Kannard, Jennifer Turney (Mark), Taylor and Kristen Svec, Samantha and Tyler Laflin, brother-in-law, Wendell Edgell, and host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Friday January 2, 2015 at Old Mission United Methodist Church, 5519 State Park Road, Fairway, KS 66205 with Rev. Karen Nyhart officiating. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, 83rd and Quivira, Lenexa, KS immediately following the service. The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service with visitation at 10:00am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Old Mission United Methodist Church and/or the American Heart Association.
