Cheryl Barnett McLaughlin, age 69, of Shawnee Mission, KS passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at her home. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. on Monday, December 21st at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS. Burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Overland Park, KS. Visitation will be 4-6:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 20th at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. The family suggests memorial contributions to City Union Mission, 1100 E. 11th Street, Kansas City, MO 64106.
Cheryl was born on November 27, 1940 in Kansas City, KS. She tried to be a good friend, a good mother, a good sister and a good teacher. In a letter, once, to her kids she wrote that she wanted written in her obituary: “In lieu of flowers, please just tell someone you have not seen or have had an argument with that you love them.” Cheryl was adored by her four grandchildren. She brightened the lives of all who knew her, whether a lifelong friend or a chance encountered stranger on the street. She was a career teacher, and was once Teacher of the Year. Her life was passing joy to others. Cheryl is survived by her brother Robert Barnett; daughter, Susan Nagel; son, David McLaughlin; and grandchildren, Kelsey, Mackenzie, Duncan and Reece.
