MARGARET HUMMEL
Clara Margaret Hummel of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on March 3, 2011. She was born on October 2, 1923 to Ann and Lester Walker of Schaller, Iowa. She attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. During World War II, she moved to Kansas City and was employed by the Retail Credit Company, where she met her husband. Margaret and Carl Hummel were married on July 5, 1948. She loved books and the discussions they inspired. She returned to college in the 1960's and earned a degree in English from U.M.K.C. She founded five book clubs over the years. She also started a Great Books Program and a Reading Is Fundamental Program for elementary school children. She was a Red Cross volunteer and member of its board. Travel, bridge, and art and design also gave her many years of enjoyment. She is survived by Carl, her husband of sixty-two years, sons Gary and Stephen, and four grandchildren Carolyn, Cathryn, David, and Matthew Hummel. Her brother, Elwood Walker of North Caldwell, New Jersey also survives her. Lorraine Van Houten, her sister, predeceased her. She was a member of the Church of the Nativity. The family plans a memorial service at a later date.
