Connie Jeanne Schworm, 63, of Overland Park, Kansas, died in her home from metastatic breast cancer on April 17, 2011, surrounded by family. She has gone to meet her Heavenly Father, who has prepared a place for her in His kingdom.
Connie was born on Aug. 28, 1947, in Denver, Colo., to Glenn and Beulah Bruce. She was raised along with her younger sister, Carol, on a farmstead near Axtell, Neb, which was founded by her great-great grandfather, Anders Nelson, in 1889 after he and his family immigrated from Sweden in 1869.
Connie was valedictorian of Hildreth High School in 1965. She attended Midland College in Fremont, Neb., and Immanuel Lutheran School of Nursing in Omaha, and graduated with a B.S. and a diploma in nursing.
While in nursing school, Connie helped a confused orderly who would later become her beloved husband, Curtis Schworm, M.D. They were married in 1970 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Axtell, Neb., where Connie had been baptized and confirmed.
After one year in Texas and three in Minnesota, Connie, Curt and their two children, Marc and Kimberly, moved to Overland Park, Kansas, in 1977. Connie was a substitute school nurse for the Blue Valley and Shawnee Mission school districts for three decades. She was an active member of Atonement Lutheran Church for more than 30 years, where she sang in the choir and participated in several ministries, including the Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry. Her greatest satisfaction was found in enriching the lives of her husband and children.
Connie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1982 and experienced two decades of remission, for which she was extremely grateful. Marc and Kimberly returned to Kansas in 2004 and 2006, respectively, which brought Connie much joy. She particularly loved caring for her three grandchildren.
Connie is preceded in death by her father, Glenn Bruce, mother, Beulah Bruce, and father-in-law, Richard Schworm. She is survived by her husband, Curtis Schworm, M.D.; son Marc Schworm, M.D., (married to Allene); daughter Kimberly Schworm Acosta (married to Richard); grandchildren Hope, Gabriel and Nathan; mother-in-law Vida Schworm; sister Carol Ott (married to Jack); sister-in-law Donna Wilhite (married to Lowell); and many adored nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Atonement Lutheran Church, 9948 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210 with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested to the Atonement Lutheran Church music fund, Bethany Lutheran Church (903 25th Road, Axtell, NE 68924) or Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry (3031 Holmes, KC, MO 64109).
