D. Gardner "Art" Arteberry, 80, died peacefully and surrounded by family on January 28, 2014.
Art was born in New Liberty, Oklahoma, on April 20, 1933, to Dave and Shirley (McLaury) Arteberry. He cherished his early years growing up on a farm and being a member of his high school's state championship football team. He graduated from Oklahoma State University and served as a lieutenant in the United States Army. He married his beloved wife June on March 14, 1959. Art loved to travel. His career with Dow Chemical Company and Harcros Chemicals enabled him and his family to live in St. Louis, New Jersey, Michigan, Tokyo, London and Leawood, where he retired.
After retirement, Art enjoyed spending the winters in Bonita Springs, Florida and was a dedicated volunteer at Lover's Key State Park. He also took great pride in his role as "mugger" for the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, where he delivered hundreds of coffee mugs to first-time church visitors over a 20 year period. He was a long-time member of the Leawood Rotary Club, an avid golfer and a fan of the Chiefs, Royals, OSU Cowboys and Jayhawks.
Art is survived by his wife, June Arteberry; children, Nancy Arteberry, David Arteberry (Michelle) and Chris Arteberry; grandchildren, Joey Jilk, Thomas Jilk, Sam Arteberry and Noah Arteberry; sisters, Mattie Gail Thompson (Gale), Davey Sue Thomas, and Diana Spurlock (Bill); and many nieces and nephews.
