David I. (?Rip?) Henderson, 89, passed away October 4, 2007, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
David was born April 30, 1918, in Burlington, Wyoming. He attended the University of Wyoming, where he received his degree in civil engineering. One year later he earned a Master?s degree in civil engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. As a new graduate, he helped the development of the road system in Yellowstone National Park as a road surveyor.
David was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe, first as an air traffic controller, and later as a meteorologist. After the war, he met Geneva M. Jackson of Concordia, Kansas, in December of 1947, and they were married June 13 the following year. David and Geneva celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this past June. David was a full-time employee of the engineering firm of Black & Veatch for 38 years, retiring in 1986 as a senior project manager. He was a lifetime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
David and Geneva loved to travel, and after his retirement they visited Hawaii, England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Canada, and took numerous trips around the U.S. David was an avid golfer, and loved joining the family in a game of cards. He was devoted to his family, and they were devoted to him. David firmly believed in donating blood, and over the years donated almost 11 gallons to the Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City.
David is survived by his wife Geneva, his daughter and her husband Neva and Charles Schleper, his son and son?s wife Ronald and Betsy Henderson, his grandchildren Alexander Henderson, Leslie Henderson, Amy Schleper, and Angela Wong and her spouse Andrew Wong, his brothers and their wives Mark and Francis Henderson, and Reanous and Merla Henderson, and his sister and her husband Helen and Donald Porter.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in memory of David to the Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City. Visitation will be Sunday, October 7, 6-8 p.m., at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, and funeral services will be held Monday, October 8, 10 a.m., at the same location.
