David C. Smith, 82, of Overland Park, KS passed away at his residence on October 17, 2015. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210. Graveside service will be 1:00pm, Thursday, October 22, 2015 at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, then following at 3:00pm will be a memorial service at Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Ave, Leawood, KS 66224. David was born and raised in Emporia, KS. He graduated from Emporia State with a master’s degree. In between schooling David was drafted in to the U.S. Army and served from 1953-55. After military service David went to work on the Santa Fe railroad. He worked many summers and holiday seasons with the railroad totaling about 20 years of employment. David was an educator and football coach for most of his adult life teaching and coaching in Nebraska, Leavenworth, KS and finally in Overland Park, KS where he taught drivers education and coached at Shawnee Mission West High School. David was a football coach and served as an assistant coach, head coach, and again as an assistant over his nearly 4 decades at Shawnee Mission West. Within that time his teams won 2 state championships. During his time teaching, coaching and being a father, he still found time to be the sponsor/leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at West. He and his wife, Pat, also founded and ran The Ark, a Christian bookstore for many years. After retiring from SMW High School in 2000 he continued to educate once again at Behind the Wheel.
David is preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Pat and granddaughter, Kelsey Smith. He is survived by his son, Greg (Missey) Smith; daughter, Shannon Smith; grandchildren, Stevie (Ryan) McLeod, Lindsey (Ryan) Evans, Codie, Zach; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Andrew, Evie, Katie, Will; and special friends, Barry Troller and Mike Bascue.
