Donald Lee Atchison, 84, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013. Don was the older of two children born on August 24, 1928 in Pratt, KS to Roy and Vera Atchison. He grew up in Kingman, KS assisting his parents with their ice cream store until he departed for college. His pursuit of an engineering degree was interrupted in 1951 by hostilities in Korea. He served his country as an X-ray technician at Tripler Army Hospital in Pearl Harbor, HI until he was honorably discharged from the United States Army as a sergeant in 1953. He finished his education graduating from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1955. He was employed by Kansas City Power and Light Company for 37 1/2 years until his retirement in 1992. Don enjoyed playing tennis for many years as a member of Nall Hills Country Club and Woodside and Overland Park Racquet Clubs often playing tournaments with his wife at various sites throughout the greater KC area. Don was also a member of Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers and Westgate Masonic Lodge #428. Throughout his life he enjoyed many hobbies. In his early years he built his first automobile and sailboat and was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed working with wood and built many of the furniture pieces in the home. His hobbies in his later years moved to photography and pursuit of his family's history through membership in the Johnson County Genealogy Society. Don will be remembered by his loving wife Phyllis, his brother Robert(Alice) Atchison and their 3 children of Pittsburgh, PA, his daughter Julie of Greensboro, NC and 2 sons and their wives, Jim (Karen) Atchison, Jerry (Tonia) Atchison both of Olathe, KS and his 4 grandsons Ryan, Kevin, Zachary and Kyle and his granddaughter Kaili. He loved his family with his whole heart and will be missed. A memorial service will be held at DW Newcomer & Sons Funeral Home at 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66210, on Thursday, April 18th at 2:00 P.M. with a visitation one hour prior at 1:00 P.M.
