Don Culbertson passed away peacefully Sunday, April 24, 2016, at the age of 81 in his home in Henderson, NV. He was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas by his parents, Roy and Nellie Culbertson. He attended Wyandotte High School and Kansas City Kansas Junior College in Kansas City, KS. He enlisted in the army in the early 50’s and was stationed as a radio technician in the Philippines. After his military service, Don embraced his drive to be an entrepreneur. During his lifetime, Don worked independently in various industries, including: insurance, flooring, foundry, utilities, shopping centers and finally, hotels. Don entered the hotel industry in the mid-1970's by acquiring several hotels in the Southeast United States. In 1983, he formed Sunway Hotel Group and remained involved in that business throughout his life.
Don spent much of his free time golfing the links at Wolf Creek Country Club in Kansas City, watching his beloved Royals and Chiefs, and travelling for work and pleasure. His love for dogs rivaled his love for fancy cars.
Don is survived by his wife, Karen Kindred; his four children, Donald Culbertson, Jr. (Natali), Kendall Culbertson (Leecil), Laura Culbertson Taylor (Curtis), and Jason Culbertson (Anna Lem); his grandchildren, Ashley, Natalie, Kaden, Sydney, Nikolas, and Ronan; and his brother, Robert Culbertson (Carol). Don was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Judy.
His pitch-perfect whistle and distinguishable laugh will be missed by all.
