Donald Max Gamet, age 95, of Overland Park, KS passed away on August 25, 2011 at The Kansas City Hospice House and Palliative Care Center. Born in Mapleton, KS in 1916, Donald spent his early years working on the family farm with his parents and four siblings, riding his pony to the one room rural school he attended. Don graduated from Atchison High School at the age of 16, receiving a B.S. degree in Business Administration from Fort Hays State in 1938, an MBA from KU in 1939, a JD in Law from KU in 1941 and Order of the Coif and a Kansas CPA License. While at Fort Hays State he earned membership in Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma. Don joined the tax department at Arthur Andersen & Co., was admitted to the partnership in 1954, and served as Partner-in-Charge of the Kansas City office from 1956 to 1970. He was then promoted to the position of Vice-Chairman of Tax Practices Worldwide at AA & Co.'s home office in Chicago, Illinois. Upon reaching AA & Co.'s mandatory retirement age, Don was named Vice-President-Treasurer of Chicago Pacific Corporation, overseeing the finances of subsidiaries that included Hoover, Maytag, Kittinger, and Pennsylvania House until 1987. Don's service to the community included: Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Heart of America United Fund Campaign, President of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, and Director of Junior Achievement of Kansas City. He was named Boss of the Year by the Metropolitan Kansas City Jaycees, and was the recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award from Ft. Hays State College. Don was listed in Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Finance & Industry.
Donald is survived by his wife of twenty-eight years, Marilyn Armel Gamet. Donald leaves the following members of his extended family, Merilyn (Nick) Paris, Carleton (Carol) Gamet, Kathy (John) Stephenson, Debbie (Bob) Frederick, John (Sherri) Armel, and Tracey (John) Skupny. He is also survived by his grandchildren Debbie Harvey, Donald Max (Medil) Harvey, Rebecca (Jeff) Day, Cyndi Stephenson, John Stephenson, Jr., Michael Stephenson, Richard (Angela) Frederick, Ross Frederick, John M. Armel, Reed Skupny (Megan), Jerzy Skupny, and six great grandchildren. He also leaves a brother-in-law, Royce L. Fleming. Donald was predeceased by his first wife, Leah Pauline Fleming, in 1981, with whom he shared forty-three wonderful years.
From the 1950's through the late 80's, Donald was one of the top tax specialists in the world, respected for his unsurpassed intelligence, integrity, and insight. Within his own family, he has always been revered and loved, and will be deeply missed.
