Don Mendrala, 54, loving father, doting husband and public servant died in his home
Thursday, January 29, 2009.
Memorial service will be at 1 pm, Monday, February 2 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel at 11200 Metcalf, in Overland Park, KS. Friends may call on the family at the funeral home following the service until 4 pm. Memorial Contributions may be made to Donald W. Mendrala Memorial Fund for Chinese adoption services.
In his distinguished 21-year career with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Mendrala served the DEA for ten years in the St. Louis field office, 4 years in the Salt Lake City field office, and 4 years at DEA Headquarters. Mr. Mendrala recently retired as Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Kansas City district office.
He was born in Chicago, IL. The son of a pharmacist, Mr. Mendrala attended the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and practiced as a registered pharmacist with his father for five years in the Chicago area. After serving his community as a volunteer firefighter and special rescue diver, Mr. Mendrala joined the DEA in 1987,
Mendrala, an iconoclast drug enforcement leader, played an important role in the investigation and conviction of Jerry Lewis-Bey, the leader of a violent drug ring that controlled over 40 percent of the St. Louis cocaine and heroin trade. He was a tireless soldier in the war on drugs and a relentlessly loyal colleague and friend.
Mr. Mendrala was a member of Christ Community Church in Leawood. He also dedicated himself to international medical volunteer service; frequently serving underserved communities in Jamaica.
Survivors include Karen, his wife of 31 years; two sons, Andy of Washington, DC and Joe of Leawood; daughter Angela of Leawood; mother Nancy, of Conyers, GA, brother Robert, of Portage, WI, two sisters Karen Yeiser of Cincinnati, OH and Judy Wilson of Conyers, GA; and his worldwide extended family of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
