Donald Richard Messmer, age 62, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2013. He was born on November 24, 1950 in Kansas City, MO the son of Otto and Lois Messmer.
Don was the youngest of three children. He married Debbie Gold in Prarie Village,KS on Dec. 17, 1984. He attended Ruskin High School and later Penn Valley College. He was a long-time resident of Overland Park for more than 30 years. He was self-employed as a Painter, Paper Hanger and Home Remodeler for 45 years. Don enjoyed nature, animals, cars and trucks. He collected knives, lighters, canes and walking sticks.
Don will be remembered by his loving wife, Debbie Messmer and son, Jeremy Hawthorne; two grandchildren, Reace and Kendra Hawthorne; and furry kids, Maddie ,Tux and Annie. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Anna Lee James; sister-in-law, Karen Ernst; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Rita Gold and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Terry and Gary Messmer.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Clever, Missouri at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Limbs for Life with Horizon Prosthetics, American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.
