Donald Schlemmer

July 14, 1910 — December 29, 2008

Donald Arthur Schlemmer, age 98, Lakeview Village, Lenexa, Kansas passed away December 29, 2008 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center after a brief illness. Cremation and inurnment at the D.W. Newcomers Johnson County Funeral Home, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. Memorial services will be held at a later date. The family requests no flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas 66208 or to the Lakeview Village Foundation, 9100 Park, Lenexa, Kansas 66215.

Mr. Schlemmer was born July 14, 1910 in Rogers, Nebraska, the son of Fred and Alice Wormwood Schlemmer. He was graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1927 from North Platte Nebraska High School. He was employed by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company as a technician in North Platte in 1927 and subsequently served in a number of managerial positions in Davenport, Iowa, Stuart, Iowa, Lincoln, Nebraska, Joliet, Illinois, New York City, Chicago and finally Kansas City where he retired in 1970.

He married Charlotte Reynolds, daughter of Bert and Jessie Blankenburg Reynolds in North Platte in 1935. He was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, serving as President of several branches of the organization both before and after retirement. He was a Chairman in the Arrowhead District of Boy Scouts of America as well as a member of the Kaw and Heart of America Councils. He received the Boy Scout Silver Beaver award. He was a long time member and officer of the Professional Mens Club of Kansas City.

After retirement Mr. and Mrs. Schlemmer traveled extensively, particularly in Asia and the Mid East.

Mr. Schlemmer is survived by his wife of 73 years and two sons, Dr. Roger B. Schlemmer and his wife of Springfield, Missouri, and Stuart A. Schlemmer of Mission, Kansas, also by two granddaughters Katherine Watson of Dallas, Texas, Gwendolyn Vena of Manhattan, Kansas and two great-granddaughters.

He was a lifelong Presbyterian and member of the Village Church since 1960.
